ACESS Seniors’ Community Programs are designed to support older adults—particularly African seniors, newcomers, refugees, and protected persons—by promoting healthy ageing, cultural connection, social inclusion, and access to essential services.
The program creates a safe and welcoming environment where seniors feel valued, supported, and engaged.
Core Program Components
Social Connection & Community Engagement
- Weekly social gatherings, cultural events, storytelling, and peer-support circles
- Intergenerational activities connecting seniors with youth and families
- Community outings to parks, museums, recreation centers, and cultural festivals
Health & Wellness Support
- Health education workshops: chronic disease management, nutrition, exercise, healthy aging
- Fitness activities tailored for seniors, such as gentle stretching, walking groups, and chair yoga
- Mental-health support groups to address loneliness, depression, trauma, or isolation
Settlement & Navigation Assistance
- Help navigating government services such as income support, housing, pensions, immigration updates, and health benefits
- Translation/interpretation assistance for seniors who speak English as a second language
- Support completing forms and accessing community programs and social services
Employment & Career Support
- Job-search assistance, resume writing, and interview preparation
- Referrals to training programs, job fairs, and employers
- Support for credential recognition and connecting newcomers to employment services
Digital Literacy & Technology Support
- Training on smartphone use, email, internet safety, and video calling
- Support in accessing virtual healthcare, online banking, and government portals
- Assistance with device setup for seniors with limited digital experience
Skills Development & Lifelong Learning
- Workshops on financial literacy, budgeting, and fraud prevention
- Learning opportunities such as arts & crafts, music, languages, cooking, gardening, and storytelling
- Volunteer opportunities for seniors to share cultural knowledge and life skills
Home & Community Support Referrals
- Referrals to home-care services, mobility aid programs, transportation assistance, and community health agencies
- Guidance for seniors experiencing elder abuse, neglect, or safety concerns
